Biology of Little Brown Bat: Appearance, biology, life cycle, habitat, diet, behavior

The little brown bat is a species named Myotis Lucifugus. Under the family of mouse eared bats, the Little brown bat is commonly spotted in North America. The species has been studied by many Fort Lauderdale researchers and scientists regarding its life cycle and behavior.

The appearance of Little brown bat
Little Brown Bat has grey fur underneath and the glossy back with pale upper side. The membranes are dark brown with a wing that can span up to 27 cm. Little brown Florida bat has short round tragus. A female bat has larger size than the male. It is often observed because of the circular. Unlike the Indiana bat, little brown bat has no keel on caclar. Plus, it has long hair that stretch long. Its tibia is short and there has a small ventral wing hair amount.

Little brown bat’s habitat is in North America. It is also available in southern Canada and some specimens found in Yukon. Brown Florida bats are also in Kamchatka, Iceland and Alaska. Some are there because of accidental shipment by humans. The roosting has 3 different times. Night roost, hibernation roost and day roost. On spring and summer and fall, the bats have day or night roosts. The morning Fort Lauderdale roost usually occurs in buildings or areas near them. After feeding, the bats have nigh roots because it helps to keep feces away. The brown Florida bats are not exactly hibernating for a long time but when the hibernation comes, it occurs on November and ends of middle March.

Little brown bats eat moths and beetles. They prefer insects like mosquitoes and they also prefer a Florida habitat near the water. They can locate their preys with their ability to echolocate. They also prey with their mouth when scooping above the river. Brown bats select only little amount of species when going for a hunt. In case they don’t catch foods during the day, they will go hunting again at night. Their diet regime has a benefit for agricultural Florida plants because they eat the pests in farms. Biologists have done many research studying how little brown bats mating. The wing band is attached before they release the bats to track their movements. There are 2 phases, active and passive. Males that are active will mate with the torpid bats. The matings in active phase is more common. The females store sperm and the highest mating season is around August or particularly before winter. The females are considered mature during the Fort Lauderdale fall. The males need longer to mature this is why the breed is during the 1st autumn.
